Origin and history of Old Tom Gin
Created in the 18th century, ‘Old Tom’ gin is a symbol of Prohibition and the golden age of gin in London.
The 18th century was a paradox for gin and spirits lovers. England was undergoing an era of prohibition where the sale and consumption of alcohol was forbidden… but this did not prevent gin from enjoying its golden age.
Production officially ceased and of course, smuggled gins appeared everywhere, most of them were undrinkable. The smugglers, never short of ideas, decided to add sugar or to macerate it in different botanicals to mask the defects of the beverages.
At the time, it was not easy to obtain the coveted beverage. Customers had to go to dubious and relatively unfrequented establishments. To indicate to customers that their establishments were discreetly selling gin, smugglers would hang a black cat (an Old Tom) on their establishment signs. A coin would be slipped between the cat’s legs and a pipe would come out of the wall to fill the glass…a kind of Drive-by !
Le Old Tom Gin by Erika Spirit
« We wanted an atypical and soft gin, more indulgent and feminine. It is, therefore, less strong in alcohol and very fragrant »
Even if it can be enjoyed in a gin and tonic, it is also excellent in cocktails because it explores different notes and flavours.
We have already successfully tested several recipes including the Tom Collins and the Royal Gin Tonic with champagne.
Our Old Tom Gin is a great accompaniment to many pastries such as pancakes, black forest and strawberry cake.
